What this slug generator does

This free online slug generator converts any title or phrase into a clean URL-safe slug ready to use in your CMS, blog, e-commerce store, or API. It removes accents (café → cafe), strips special characters, handles Unicode, optionally removes English stopwords, enforces a maximum length that doesn’t cut off mid-word, and lets you choose between hyphens, underscores, or dots as separators. Paste one title per line to batch-generate hundreds of slugs at once. Everything runs in your browser with pure vanilla JavaScript — no library, no server, no upload.

How to generate a URL slug

  1. Paste your title into the text box. For batch mode, put one title per line.
  2. Choose your separator — hyphen (-) is the SEO standard and Google-recommended default. Underscores work but Google treats them as connectors instead of word separators.
  3. Set the max length — 60 characters is a common SEO best practice for URL slugs.
  4. Configure options:
    • Lowercase — recommended (URLs are case-sensitive on many servers)
    • Strip accents — converts é/ü/ñ to plain ASCII
    • Remove stopwords — cuts short words like “the,” “and,” “of” for a cleaner slug
    • Keep numbers — include or exclude digits
  5. Click Generate slug. Copy the result and paste it into your CMS URL field.

Why slugs matter for SEO

The URL slug is one of the strongest on-page SEO signals Google reads. It appears in the SERP snippet, in shared social links, and in browser bookmarks. A clean, keyword-rich, human-readable slug improves click-through rate and gives search engines a clear signal about page content.

Google’s official guidance (from Google Search Central):

  • Use hyphens, not underscores. Google treats my-page as “my page” (two words) but my_page as “my_page” (one word).
  • Keep it descriptive and short. Long slugs get truncated in SERPs and are hard to remember or share.
  • Use lowercase. Some servers treat /My-Page and /my-page as different URLs — canonicalizing to lowercase avoids duplicate content.
  • Include your primary keyword if it fits naturally. Forced keyword stuffing looks spammy.
  • Avoid dates and IDs. /post/1234 tells Google nothing. /how-to-fix-error-404 tells Google exactly what the page is about.

Features

  • Full Unicode handling — accented Latin characters, German umlauts, Portuguese diacritics all transliterate cleanly
  • 3 separator options — hyphen (SEO-standard), underscore, or dot
  • Smart truncation — cuts at word boundaries, never mid-word
  • Stopword removal — optional filter for 30+ common English stopwords
  • Batch mode — paste one title per line to generate hundreds at once
  • Live example — the tool starts with a working example so you can see the output immediately
  • Zero libraries loaded — pure vanilla JavaScript, fast on any device
  • 100% offline after first page load

Stopwords removed (when enabled)

Removing stopwords creates tighter, more keyword-focused slugs. The tool removes: a, an, and, are, as, at, be, by, for, from, has, he, in, is, it, its, of, on, that, the, to, was, were, will, with, or, but, not, this, these, those.

Trade-off: Removing stopwords can occasionally hurt readability. “The Beatles” becomes “beatles” — losing meaningful capitalization context. Keep stopwords for people/place/product names.

Common use cases

Blog post URLs — Every new post needs a slug. Paste your headline, generate a slug, paste into WordPress → Permalink field. Done in 10 seconds.

E-commerce product URLs — Convert product names to clean slugs for Shopify, WooCommerce, or custom stores. “Nike Air Max 90 — Blue & White (Size 10)” becomes nike-air-max-90-blue-white-size-10.

Documentation and knowledge bases — Convert article titles to slugs for a docs site. Consistent slugging makes URLs predictable and easier to maintain.

Bulk content migration — Moving from one CMS to another? Paste all your article titles at once and get all the slugs in one output.

Category and tag URLs — Blog categories often need clean slugs. “Tips & Tricks” becomes tips-tricks.

API endpoints and file names — Any place where user-generated text needs to become a system-safe identifier.

Filename generation — For downloads and exports, slug the document title before saving.

Pro tips

  • Use hyphens, always. Google treats hyphens as word separators but underscores as connectors. seo-tips is understood as “seo tips”; seo_tips is understood as “seo_tips” (one weird word).
  • Keep slugs under 60 characters for optimal SERP display. Google shows about 60 characters of URL before truncating with an ellipsis.
  • Include your primary keyword in the slug where natural. A slug of how-to-fix-error-404 beats solution-for-when-things-break-online on the target keyword.
  • Never change a slug after publishing without setting up a 301 redirect. Every backlink and share of the old URL will 404. Use our Redirect tools if you must change.
  • For non-English content, keep accents in the slug if your CMS supports Unicode URLs, or transliterate consistently. Mixing “café” and “cafe” across a site creates duplicate content confusion.
  • Batch mode is a time saver for bulk imports. Paste 500 titles, generate 500 slugs, paste back into your spreadsheet — all in one operation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Should URL slugs use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google explicitly treats hyphens as word separators but underscores as connectors — meaning seo-tips is read as “seo tips” while seo_tips is read as one word. Always use hyphens for SEO.

What’s the ideal length for a URL slug?

Under 60 characters. Google displays about 60 characters of URL in search results before truncating with an ellipsis. Shorter slugs are more shareable and memorable.

Should I remove stopwords like “the” and “and”?

Optional and situational. Removing them creates tighter slugs. Keep them when they’re part of a proper name or brand.

Does the tool handle non-English characters?

Yes. Accented characters (é, ü, ñ, ç) transliterate to plain ASCII via NFD Unicode normalization. Cyrillic, Greek, and CJK scripts also work but produce transliterated slugs.

Should I change my slug if it has typos?

Only if you’re willing to set up 301 redirects from the old URL. Every backlink to the old slug will 404 otherwise. Live with small typos rather than break backlinks.

Are numbers okay in slugs?

Yes. Numbers are SEO-friendly and often help (“10-best-tips”, “2026-guide”). Turn off the “Keep numbers” toggle only if you need pure alphabetic slugs.
