Time Addition Calculator — Add Hours, Minutes & Seconds (Timesheet Ready)

Sum durations and clock ranges in the same table. Every row can hold a fixed duration (2:45:00) or a start-to-end shift (09:00 → 17:00) — one tap switches modes. Read the total in HH:MM:SS, decimal hours, decimal minutes, seconds, and ISO 8601. A live donut chart shows composition, a rounding dropdown matches timesheet increments, and separate modes handle multiplying/dividing durations, adding to a clock time (with an animated analog clock), and calculating the time between two clock times on a 24-hour circular arc.

What is an add time calculator?

An add time calculator sums durations expressed in hours, minutes, and seconds. It is different from a regular calculator because time is not base-10 — it is base-60. When the seconds column reaches 60, it rolls into a single minute. When the minutes column reaches 60, it rolls into a single hour. A standard decimal calculator cannot do this, which is why adding times on a calculator designed for money gives the wrong answer.

This tool handles the carry logic automatically and mixes duration rows (like 2:45:00) with clock-range rows (like 09:00 → 17:00) in the same table. That matters because most timesheets record start and end times, not durations — and the tool computes the shift length for you, including overnight shifts.

Alongside the running total it shows the total as HH:MM:SS, decimal hours, decimal minutes, total seconds, days/hours/minutes/seconds, and ISO 8601 duration. A rounding dropdown matches the increment your timesheet system expects (1, 5, 6, 10, 15, or 30 minutes).

How to use the calculator

Add Durations mode

  1. Enter the first row. By default it is a Duration row with H:M:S fields.
  2. To enter a shift instead, tap the small Duration/Range toggle on the left of the row. The fields become Start → End, and the tool computes the duration automatically.
  3. Tap the +/- sign button on the left of any row to switch it between addition and subtraction. Subtraction rows turn pink and appear hatched in the donut.
  4. Click + Add duration row or + Add shift row for more rows, or Paste list for bulk entry.
  5. Add a short label to any row (like "Mon" or "Ep 1"). Labels flow through to the donut legend, history, and timesheet copy.
  6. Read the total, donut composition chart, and full output grid.
  7. Choose a rounding increment from the dropdown to match your timesheet system.

Multiply / Divide mode

Enter a duration and a factor. Two donut rings show the before-and-after comparison. A 45-minute podcast × 12 episodes equals exactly 9 hours.

Clock + Duration mode

Enter a start time and a duration to add. An animated analog clock shows four hands: the start hour/minute hands in green and the end hour/minute hands in purple, with an amber arc showing the sweep. Results appear in both 24-hour and 12-hour formats with a midnight-crossing indicator.

Between Times mode

Enter two clock times and get the duration between them. The 24-hour circular arc visualises the span — drag the green and purple rim markers to adjust the times without touching the inputs. Snap-to-5-minutes is applied automatically.

How to add time by hand

The manual method is straightforward once you remember that every column carries at 60, not 10.

  1. Add the seconds. If the sum is 60 or more, subtract 60 and carry 1 to the minutes column.
  2. Add the minutes, including any carry. If the sum is 60 or more, subtract 60 and carry 1 to the hours column.
  3. Add the hours, including any carry. Hours have no upper limit — 27 hours is a valid duration.

Worked example: 1:45:30 + 2:30:45.

  • Seconds: 30 + 45 = 75 = 60 + 15. Write 15, carry 1 minute.
  • Minutes: 45 + 30 + 1 = 76 = 60 + 16. Write 16, carry 1 hour.
  • Hours: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4.
  • Total: 4:16:15.

Add time, hour calculator, work hours calculator — same tool, different names

People search for this tool under many names. They all mean the same operation:

  • Add time calculator — general-purpose, the Add Durations mode.
  • Hour calculator — simple hour-and-minute sums and minute-to-hour conversions.
  • Work hours calculator — the Add Durations mode with emphasis on decimal-hour payroll output.
  • Time card calculator — clock-in/clock-out shift lengths, which the Range row mode handles directly.
  • Time sum calculator — same as add time; usually emphasising multi-row sums.
  • Add hours and minutes calculator — the most specific phrasing.
  • Time adder — mobile-app shorthand.

Adding time in Excel, Sheets, and Numbers

Excel and Google Sheets

Both store times as fractions of a day: 12:00:00 = 0.5, 06:00:00 = 0.25. Use =SUM(A1:A10). To display totals over 24 hours without wrap-around, apply a custom number format [h]:mm:ss. To get decimal hours, multiply the total cell by 24: =A11*24.

Apple Numbers

Numbers uses the same duration model. Format the result cell as Duration from the Cell Format panel and it will display correctly past 24 hours — no custom format needed.

LibreOffice Calc

Formula is =SUM(A1:A10). Right-click the result cell → Format Cells → Numbers tab → Format Code, and enter [HH]:MM:SS.

Timesheet and payroll use

Payroll systems almost always store hours in decimal format because multiplying decimals is cleaner than multiplying HH:MM values. The rule is:

decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60) + (seconds ÷ 3600)

For example, 7:45:30 = 7 + (45/60) + (30/3600) = 7.7583 decimal hours.

Most employers round timesheets to the nearest quarter hour, sixth hour, or tenth hour. The Round total to dropdown in the result card handles all three, plus exact, 1-minute, 5-minute, and 30-minute rounding.

Adding media durations

  • Podcast episode lengths. Add every episode to know the total library length, or add segments within one episode.
  • Video editing. Add clip durations to estimate final export length.
  • Audio books. Sum every chapter duration to get total listening time.
  • YouTube playlists. Paste each video length as one row.
  • Music albums. Each track's runtime as one row.

Time addition in sports

  • Marathon splits. Add each 5K split to verify the finish time is consistent.
  • Swimming relays. Sum each leg's time to get the team total.
  • Ironman triathlons. Add swim, bike, and run segments plus transitions.
  • Esports rounds. Sum the duration of every round to check the match log.

Work and scheduling scenarios

  • Freelance project estimates. Enter each task as a row and read the total. The donut chart shows which task dominates.
  • Billable hour tracking. Sum each client session and convert to decimal hours for invoicing.
  • Shift scheduling. Use clock-range rows to enter each shift's start and end times.
  • Meeting time audits. Add the actual length of every meeting a team attended in a week.
  • Overtime calculation. Sum the week, then subtract the 40-hour (or 48-hour in the UK) threshold.
  • Call centre AHT. Add every call's duration and divide by the number of calls.

Duration formats explained

HH:MM:SS

Standard human-readable duration. Hours can exceed 24.

Decimal hours

Total duration as a single decimal number in hours. 1:30:00 = 1.5.

Decimal minutes

Total in minutes. 1:30:00 = 90.

Decimal seconds

Total in seconds. 1:00:00 = 3,600.

ISO 8601 duration format

Machine-readable standard PnDTnHnMnS. 1 day, 2 hours, 30 minutes, 15 seconds = P1DT2H30M15S. Used in APIs and databases.

Common mistakes when adding time

  • Using a decimal calculator. "1.30 + 2.45" on a normal calculator gives 3.75, but 1:30 + 2:45 is 4:15.
  • Forgetting to carry. Adding 45 + 30 minutes and writing 75 minutes without converting to 1 hour 15 minutes.
  • Mixing clock times and durations. "9:00 to 17:00" is a range; the duration is 8 hours.
  • Summing in Excel and forgetting [h]. Excel wraps totals over 24 hours unless the cell uses [h]:mm:ss.
  • Rounding at the wrong stage. Round the final total, not each row. Rounding rows first compounds error.
  • Forgetting daylight saving. The clock-and-duration mode uses arithmetic; DST changes shift the wall-clock reading by an hour.
  • Not subtracting lunch breaks. A 9:00–17:00 shift with 30-minute unpaid lunch is 7.5 hours.
  • Forgetting time zone offsets. Between Times is within a single time zone; crossing zones changes the arithmetic.

Limitations

  • The calculator works with durations and clock ranges. It does not compute multi-date differences — the Clock + Duration mode assumes the result lands within the following 24 hours unless the crossing-midnight indicator tells you otherwise.
  • It does not account for daylight saving time transitions.
  • Milliseconds are not supported.
  • Weeks and months are shown as fixed 7-day and approximately-30-day multiples.
  • The 24-hour arc visualisation handles within-day spans; multi-day differences should use the Add Durations mode with day-level rows.

Privacy and data handling

Every calculation runs in your browser using vanilla JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged, cached, or transmitted anywhere. The recent totals list is stored only in your browser's local storage and can be cleared with one button.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours, minutes, and seconds?

Add hours, minutes, and seconds separately. Then carry over: if seconds ≥ 60, subtract 60 and add 1 minute. If minutes ≥ 60, subtract 60 and add 1 hour. Example: 1:45:30 + 2:30:45 = 4:16:15.

What is an add time calculator?

An add time calculator sums durations in hours, minutes, and seconds. It works in base-60, not base-10 — 60 seconds roll into a minute, 60 minutes into an hour. This calculator handles carry automatically and outputs HH:MM:SS plus decimal hours for payroll.

How do I add a clock range instead of a duration?

Toggle any row in the Add Durations tab from Duration to Range mode. In Range mode you enter start and end times and the tool computes the shift length automatically, handling overnight shifts.

How do I add time in Excel?

Enter durations as HH:MM:SS and use =SUM(A1:A10). Right-click the result, choose Format Cells → Custom, and set the format to [h]:mm:ss so Excel does not wrap the total at 24 hours. Multiply the total by 24 to get decimal hours for payroll.

How many minutes are in 24 hours?

1,440 minutes. 24 × 60 = 1,440.

How many seconds in an hour?

3,600 seconds. 60 × 60 = 3,600.

How many seconds in a day?

86,400 seconds. 24 × 60 × 60 = 86,400.

How do I add times that exceed 24 hours?

Treat them as durations, not clock times. 25 hours is 25:00:00 as a duration. This calculator has no upper limit on hours per row, and shows the total as days/hours/minutes/seconds when it exceeds 24 hours.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide minutes by 60. 30 min = 0.5 h. 45 min = 0.75 h. 15 min = 0.25 h. Payroll systems use this decimal form.

How do I add a duration to a specific clock time?

Use the Clock + Duration tab. Enter the start time and duration. The tool returns the end time in 24-hour and 12-hour format and warns when the result crosses midnight. An interactive clock face shows both times and the arc between them.

What is a work hours calculator?

A work hours calculator sums hours worked across a day or week. This tool's Add Durations mode is that calculator — switch rows to Range mode to enter shift times, or leave them in Duration mode to enter hours directly.

What is a time card calculator?

A time card calculator converts clock-in and clock-out times into total hours worked. The Between Times tab computes one shift's length; entering multiple shifts as Range rows in Add Durations computes the weekly total.

How do I calculate overtime hours?

Sum the week, then subtract the threshold. In the US, hours above 40/week are typically overtime (1.5× rate). In the UK, overtime usually starts after 48 hours unless the contract specifies otherwise.

Can the calculator round timesheet hours?

Yes. The Round total dropdown offers Exact, 1, 5, 6, 10, 15, and 30 minutes. It rounds the final total, not each row — the correct approach for payroll because rounding each row compounds error.

How do I add lunch breaks into a timesheet?

Add a subtraction row of −0:30:00 for a 30-minute unpaid lunch. The row sign toggle switches between add and subtract.

Can I paste a list of times?

Yes. Click Paste list and paste one duration per line in HH:MM:SS, MM:SS, or plain seconds. Lines starting with a minus sign become subtraction rows.

Does the calculator subtract times?

Yes. Set any row's sign toggle to minus, or use Between Times for a single shift. Subtraction uses the same base-60 borrow logic in reverse.

Can I multiply or divide a duration?

Yes. Use the Multiply / Divide tab. A 45-minute podcast × 12 episodes = 9 hours exactly. Two donut rings show the before-and-after comparison.

What is the ISO 8601 duration format?

A machine-readable duration format starting with P and using D/H/M/S designators. 1 day 2 hours 30 minutes 15 seconds is written P1DT2H30M15S.

How do I add up hours in Google Sheets?

Use =SUM(A1:A10). Set the cell format to Duration or Custom [h]:mm:ss. Google Sheets stores times as fractions of a day, so 12:00:00 = 0.5.

Why can't I add times on a normal calculator?

Normal calculators use base-10 columns. Time uses base-60. You must convert everything to a single unit, add, then convert back — or use a base-60 calculator like this one.

Does the calculator work offline?

Yes. Everything runs in your browser after the first load — no server calls, no account, no upload.

Can I share a calculation?

Yes. The Share link button encodes the current rows, mode, and totals into the URL hash.

How many minutes in 8 hours?

480 minutes. 8 × 60 = 480.

How many hours in 10000 minutes?

166 hours 40 minutes, or about 166.67 decimal hours. 10,000 ÷ 60 = 166.67.

How long is 90 minutes?

1 hour 30 minutes, or 1.5 decimal hours.

How do I convert decimal hours back to HH:MM?

Multiply the decimal part by 60. For 7.75 decimal hours: 7 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 7:45.

What are the common timesheet rounding increments?

Quarter hour (15 min = 0.25 h), sixth hour (10 min = 0.1667 h), tenth hour (6 min = 0.1 h). Some employers round to the nearest 5 minutes.

How do I add a stopwatch start, stop, and pause time?

If the stopwatch gives split durations, enter each as a Duration row. If it gives only start and end times, switch the row to Range mode.
