What this discount calculator does
This free online discount calculator tells you exactly what you’re paying and what you’re saving on any percent-off deal. It handles the four calculations you actually need in a store or checkout: sale price, dollar savings, stacked discounts (a discount on top of another discount), and after-tax total. It also shows the “effective total discount” — the honest single-percentage equivalent of a stacked-discount deal like “25% off plus extra 10%” (which is not 35% off, no matter what the sign says).

How to calculate a discount by hand
The core formula: Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). A $80 item at 30% off is 80 × (1 − 0.30) = 80 × 0.70 = $56, saving you $24. To find the savings alone, multiply original by discount%: 80 × 0.30 = 24. This calculator does the math instantly, but knowing the formula helps you spot pricing tricks in stores and verify sale claims on your receipt.
Stacked discounts — why “25% + extra 10%” isn’t 35%
Retailers love stacked discounts because the sign looks bigger than the actual savings. Here’s what really happens on a $100 item:
- First discount, 25% off → $75
- Extra 10% off the $75 → $67.50
- Effective total discount: 32.5%, not 35%
Why the difference? The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. The bigger the first discount, the bigger this gap. “50% + extra 30%” isn’t 80% off — it’s 65%. Common retail pricing tricks decoded
“Buy One Get One Free” (BOGO) = 50% off, not 100%
You pay for one item and get another free, so the average price per item is halved. If you only want one item, BOGO gives you no discount at all — you’re paying full price.
“Buy One Get One 50% Off” = 25% off (if you buy both)
Two $100 items = $100 + $50 = $150 total for $200 worth. That’s 25% off the total, not 50%.
“Save 30%” vs “30% off”
Identical. It’s a marketing preference — “save” sounds more positive than “off,” but the math is the same.
“Up to 70% off”
The “up to” is doing heavy lifting. Usually the biggest discount applies to one clearance item nobody wants. Most items in the store are at 20–30% off, sometimes less. Always check individual item price tags.
“Was $150, now $99”
Anchoring pricing. Some stores permanently label items with an inflated “was” price. Search the product name online to check whether $99 is actually a discount or the normal price.
Buy More, Save More tiers
“10% off 2, 20% off 3, 30% off 4+” — real discounts, but calculate per-item cost before committing. If you were only going to buy one, buying three at 20% off is still more expensive than buying one at full price.

In-store shopping — Verify sale claims at the register before committing. Compare “40% off” vs “$50 off” — sometimes the flat-dollar deal is better on cheap items and worse on expensive ones.

Pro tips
- Screenshot the price tag when you see a big “up to X%” claim. If your actual discount at the register is less, show the sign and ask for the advertised price.
- Compare “% off” vs “$ off” for expensive items. $200 off a $1,000 laptop is 20%. 20% off a $1,000 laptop is $200. Same result — but “$200 off” looks smaller in an ad than “20% off,” and stores exploit that psychology.
- Don’t forget shipping. “50% off” with $15 shipping vs “30% off” with free shipping is often a wash. Add shipping into your original price.
- Reverse-verify sale claims. If a sign says “was $200, now $120,” that should be 40% off. If it’s labeled as “50% off,” search the item online to check the real regular price.
