What is a microphone test tool?

A microphone test tool is a small utility that captures live audio from your mic and shows you visually and audibly whether the microphone is working, how loud your voice is being picked up, and how the recorded sound compares to what you’re actually saying. It answers questions like: is my mic even receiving input? Is it too quiet? Is it picking up too much background noise? Is my browser using the right device?

Our microphone test does all three of those checks in one place. A live level meter shows the volume of your voice in decibels. A frequency spectrum shows the tonal balance of what’s being picked up. And an optional record-and-playback lets you hear exactly what other people would hear when you’re on a call.

How to use the microphone test

  1. Click Start microphone test. Your browser will ask for microphone permission the first time — click Allow.
  2. Speak or make sound. The volume meter jumps to reflect how loud your voice is. Green is a healthy level (around -20 to -6 dB). Yellow is loud. Red means you’re clipping and will sound distorted.
  3. If nothing moves, use the device dropdown to switch to a different microphone. Many computers have both a built-in mic and a USB or headset mic, and the browser might be using the wrong one.
  4. Click Hear yourself to route the mic to your speakers. Wear headphones for this — speakers cause feedback squeal.
  5. Click Record 5 sec & play back to capture a short sample and hear exactly what others hear. This is the most useful test because it removes any confusion about “does the mic sound different in real time versus recorded.”

Understanding the spectrum display

The frequency spectrum shows how much energy is present at each frequency, from bass (left) to treble (right). Normal human speech clusters mostly between 100 Hz and 4 kHz. If your spectrum shows heavy activity below 60 Hz or above 8 kHz while you’re not speaking, that’s noise — likely fan hum, air conditioning rumble, or high-frequency electrical interference. A clean microphone in a quiet room shows a mostly flat spectrum at the baseline when you’re silent.

Common problems and fixes

Meter doesn’t move at all. The browser is using a different microphone than you think. Try the device dropdown. If no devices appear, the browser doesn’t have permission — check the padlock icon in your address bar.

Meter shows lots of noise even when silent. Fan noise, USB interference, or ground-loop hum. Move the mic away from your computer, or plug it into a different USB port. For USB mics, avoid USB hubs — plug directly into the computer.

Voice sounds robotic in the echo test. The browser is applying aggressive noise suppression. This is usually done for calls but hurts music and detailed recording. Some browsers let you disable this in flags, but for basic communication it’s usually fine.

My USB mic doesn’t appear in the list. Unplug and replug. If still missing, your OS hasn’t recognized it — check Device Manager (Windows) or System Settings → Sound (Mac).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does the microphone test upload my voice?

No. Every measurement runs locally in your browser using the Web Audio API’s AnalyserNode. You can turn off the internet after the page loads and the test still works.

What is a good microphone level in dB?

Aim for -20 to -6 dB while speaking normally. Below -30 dB is too quiet for clear speech; above -3 dB risks distortion when you speak more forcefully.

Why can’t I hear myself in the echo test?

Two possibilities: your speakers are muted, or your browser’s autoplay policy blocked audio playback. Click anywhere on the page to satisfy the user-gesture requirement, then try again.

Can I test my USB microphone?

Yes. Any microphone your operating system recognizes — built-in, USB, Bluetooth, or headset — appears in the device dropdown once you grant permission.

Why does my voice sound different in playback than live?

This is normal. When you speak, you also hear your own voice through skull conduction, which adds low frequencies. What the microphone hears is only the airborne sound — the same thing everyone else hears.

The meter shows activity when I’m silent — is my mic broken?

Not necessarily. It’s picking up ambient room noise, fan noise, or handling noise. Move to a quieter room or turn off nearby fans and try again. If it’s still active, you may have USB interference.

Does this work with Bluetooth microphones?

Yes, if your operating system has paired the Bluetooth device and it appears as an input source. Note that Bluetooth microphones have significantly higher latency and lower quality than wired options.
