Play 200 Hz in the left ear and 210 Hz in the right ear, and your brain experiences a 10 Hz pulsing sensation that isn’t physically present in the audio at all. This 10 Hz phantom rhythm falls in the Alpha brainwave range, which is associated with relaxed alertness.
The idea behind binaural-beat listening is a hypothesis called “frequency-following response” — that when the brain is repeatedly exposed to a rhythmic auditory pulse, its own electrical activity may synchronize with that pulse. Research on this effect has produced mixed results (some studies show measurable EEG changes; others don’t), so treat binaural beats as a relaxation and focus aid rather than a proven medical treatment. Best practices for binaural beat listening
Use good stereo headphones. Cheap earbuds sometimes have channel crosstalk that muddies the effect. Any decent pair of over-ear or in-ear headphones works fine.
Sessions of 15-45 minutes. Shorter than 15 minutes and the brain hasn’t had time to entrain. Much longer than 45 minutes and there’s diminishing returns. Fifteen to thirty minutes is a common sweet spot.
Consistent daily use produces better results than sporadic use. Like meditation itself, the benefits build over weeks of practice.
Pair with your actual activity. Don’t listen to Beta focus beats while lying in bed — pair them with actual study or work. Don’t listen to Delta sleep beats while trying to concentrate. Match the beat to your goal.
Low volume works fine. Louder is not better with binaural beats. Set the volume to a comfortable, non-fatiguing level.
What binaural beats will and won’t do
They will help many listeners fall asleep faster, focus more deeply, and enter meditative states more easily — through a combination of the frequency-following response, the rhythmic distraction from mind-wandering, and the placebo effect (which is itself a genuine, measurable neurological phenomenon).
They won’t cure depression, treat ADHD, replace medication, or produce psychoactive drug-like states. Any product marketing that claims otherwise is overreaching what the research supports.

Binaural beats are generally considered safe for adults. However, people with epilepsy or seizure disorders should consult a doctor before using rhythmic audio, as some individuals with photosensitive or auditory-sensitive epilepsy have been triggered by rhythmic stimuli. Avoid using while driving or operating machinery — some presets are specifically designed to induce drowsiness. Don’t use with hearing aids at high volumes.
