Every result explained

Exact age (Y / M / D)

Your age broken down into complete years, remaining full months after those years, and remaining days after those months. This is the standard way ages are reported on passports, driver’s licenses, and legal forms.

Total months / weeks / days / hours

Your age expressed as a single running total in each unit. Useful for milestones (“I’ve been alive 10,000 days!”), parenting (“my baby is 87 weeks old”), and simple curiosity. All calculations are exact — they account for leap years and varying month lengths.

Next birthday countdown

The number of days remaining until your next birthday plus the exact weekday it falls on. If today is your birthday, we say so celebratorily.

Day of week born

Monday’s child, Tuesday’s child, and so on. Some cultures assign personality traits to birth day of the week. It’s also useful for numerological or astrological research and for satisfying childhood curiosity.

Western + Chinese zodiac signs

Western tropical zodiac uses 12 solar-month signs from Aries to Pisces. Chinese zodiac uses a 12-year animal cycle. Both are automatically detected from your birth date using widely accepted date ranges.

The math behind an exact age calculation

An accurate age calculator can’t just subtract years. It has to handle month boundaries, varying month lengths, and leap years correctly. Our calculator walks through the calendar the same way the US Census and the Social Security Administration do for official age reporting:

  1. Start with the difference between the current year and birth year
  2. If today’s month is earlier than the birth month, subtract one year and add 12 months
  3. If today’s day of month is earlier than the birth day, subtract one month and add the number of days in the previous month
  4. Any remaining days are the exact day count

This walk-through method handles every edge case — February in a leap year, March 1 following a February 29, and so on — without off-by-one errors.

Real-world use cases

Legal and official forms — Prove you are 18, 21, or 65 on a specific date. Passports, driver’s licenses, school enrollment, and voter registration all require an exact age calculation. Rounded years are not accepted.

Milestone celebrations — “How many days until my 30th?” · “When will I hit 10,000 days old?” · “How many months has my baby been alive?” · “What day of the week is my anniversary this year?” — all one click away.

Insurance and retirement planning — Life insurance premiums depend on your age at policy issue. Retirement accounts have age-based rules — 59½ for penalty-free 401(k) withdrawals, 62 for early Social Security, 73 for Required Minimum Distributions — and getting the date exactly right matters.

Genealogy and family research — Calculate how old ancestors were at key life events. When did great-grandfather emigrate — at 22 or 32? How old were both parents when they married?

Fitness and health tracking — Age-based training zones, VO2 max estimates, and medication dosing all require exact age at a specific test date.

Pro tips

  • To find someone’s age on a historical date, enter their birth date and set “Age at date” to the event date. Great for genealogy research.
  • The shareable link feature encodes the birth date in the URL — no server storage. Sending the link to a family member opens the calculator with the date pre-filled.
  • For Feb 29 birthdays, we treat March 1 as the effective birthday in non-leap years for the countdown (this matches most legal jurisdictions). The total-days count is always exact.
  • Age is calculated at midnight of your local timezone. Right after midnight on your birthday, the day count resets to 0.
  • The Chinese zodiac uses solar-year approximation. True Chinese astrological zodiac uses the lunar calendar (Chinese New Year), which falls between late January and mid-February. If precision matters for your birthday near that date, cross-check with a lunar-calendar converter.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How is my age calculated exactly?

Calendar-walk subtraction: start with year difference, subtract if the birth month hasn’t been reached yet, carry the correct number of days from the previous month. This matches US Census methodology and handles leap years correctly.

Does it handle leap-year birthdays (Feb 29)?

Yes. For Feb 29 birthdays in non-leap years, we treat March 1 as the effective birthday for the countdown, matching most legal jurisdictions. The total-days count is always exact.

Which zodiac systems do you use?

Western tropical zodiac (12 solar-month signs from Aries to Pisces) and Chinese zodiac (12-year animal cycle). Both use widely accepted date ranges.

Can I calculate age between two past dates?

Yes. Set the “Age at date” field to any past or future date. This is useful for historical research and future planning like retirement or milestone anniversaries.

Is my birthday stored anywhere?

No. Your date is only used in browser memory during your session. It’s only stored in the URL if you click “Copy shareable link” — and even that link is generated locally, never on our server.

What’s the day-of-week-born useful for?

Cultural traditions (the “Monday’s Child” nursery rhyme), naming customs in some African and Caribbean cultures, and personal curiosity. Some people also use it for numerological or astrological analysis.
