What is a zodiac sign calculator?
A zodiac sign calculator takes a birth date and returns the sign of the Western zodiac that the Sun occupied on that day — commonly called your Sun sign or star sign. In the tropical zodiac that underlies most Western astrology, the Sun's annual path around the sky is divided into twelve equal 30° slices, each named after a constellation: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Because the divisions are equal and pinned to the March equinox rather than to the actual constellation boundaries, the Sun sign depends only on the month and day — the year does not change it.
That is why a tool like this can be a simple date lookup: enter the month and day, and the sign falls out of the date range. What makes a zodiac sign calculator genuinely useful — and what separates a good tool from a bare lookup — is everything around that core answer. A useful calculator shows the exact date range your sign covers, tells you when you are on a cusp (born on the day or two either side of a sign boundary, where the Sun is transitioning), and gives you the sign's four-attribute profile: its element, its modality, its ruling planet and its traditional traits.
This tool takes that idea and pushes it further. You get a live interactive zodiac wheel that highlights your sign in its element colour and plots your birthday as a red pointer, a full result card with element, modality, ruling planet and polarity, a trait breakdown with strengths and the "shadow" side, compatibility hints using the traditional element-pairing rule, the Chinese zodiac animal for the year you entered, and a full reference table of all twelve signs you can compare against. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.
💡 Quick example. Someone born on April 5 falls between March 21 and April 19, so their Sun sign is Aries (♈) — the first sign of the zodiac, a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars. Someone born on November 22 sits on the Scorpio–Sagittarius cusp: the date range assigns them to Sagittarius, and the tool flags the birthday as a cusp so you know they are right on the boundary.
How to use the calculator
The tool accepts your birth date three different ways, all live:
- Three dropdowns. Pick the month, day and (optionally) year from the top row. The day dropdown automatically rebuilds with the right number of days whenever the month changes.
- Quick-pick grid. Tap a month chip, then a day tile. Days marked with an amber dot are cusps — they sit within two days of a sign boundary. This is the fastest path on a phone.
- Paste a date. Type or paste any common format —
1995-04-05,4/5/1995,April 5, 1995, or even a yearless11/22— and press Use. The dropdowns and grid update instantly.
As soon as a valid date is entered, the wheel and result card update. If the date is impossible (for example February 29 in a non-leap year, or April 31), the tool shows a clear inline error and asks you to correct it.
The zodiac dates — full reference
The twelve Western zodiac signs and their date ranges are fixed. These are the exact boundaries the calculator uses:
| Sign | Dates | Sign | Dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| ♈ Aries | Mar 21 – Apr 19 | ♎ Libra | Sep 23 – Oct 22 |
| ♉ Taurus | Apr 20 – May 20 | ♏ Scorpio | Oct 23 – Nov 21 |
| ♊ Gemini | May 21 – Jun 20 | ♐ Sagittarius | Nov 22 – Dec 21 |
| ♋ Cancer | Jun 21 – Jul 22 | ♑ Capricorn | Dec 22 – Jan 19 |
| ♌ Leo | Jul 23 – Aug 22 | ♒ Aquarius | Jan 20 – Feb 18 |
| ♍ Virgo | Aug 23 – Sep 22 | ♓ Pisces | Feb 19 – Mar 20 |
These ranges are widely used and match what you see in most horoscope columns, birthday-card generators and printable wall charts. They are the tropical zodiac dates — the sign boundaries that follow the Sun's seasonal position on the ecliptic. A second system, the sidereal zodiac, uses slightly different dates because it accounts for the slow wobble of Earth's axis (the precession of the equinoxes), which has shifted the astronomical constellations about one sign backwards over the past two millennia. This tool uses the tropical zodiac because that is what almost all consumer astrology — horoscopes, sign-compatibility charts, personality articles — uses.

Elements, modalities and the 4 × 3 grid
Every zodiac sign has two structural attributes beyond its date range: an element and a modality. Together they form a 4 × 3 grid that produces exactly twelve unique combinations — one per sign, with no two signs sharing both. This is why you can recognise a sign from its element-and-modality pair alone.
The four elements
- 🔥 Fire — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Traditionally associated with drive, enthusiasm, spontaneity and self-expression.
- 🌱 Earth — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Traditionally associated with practicality, patience, stability and attention to the physical world.
- 💨 Air — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Traditionally associated with intellect, communication, ideas and social connection.
- 💧 Water — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Traditionally associated with emotion, intuition, empathy and depth of feeling.
The three modalities
Modalities (also called quadruplicities) describe how a sign initiates, sustains or adapts to energy. Each element contains exactly one sign of each modality, so the grid is balanced.
- Cardinal — Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. Starters. They initiate new cycles and begin things; the four cardinal signs coincide with the two solstices and two equinoxes that start each season.
- Fixed — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. Sustainers. They consolidate, stabilise and hold the middle of a season; they are typically described as steady, determined and resistant to change.
- Mutable — Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. Adapters. They handle the transitions between seasons and are associated with flexibility, adjustment and versatility.
| Element ↓ / Modality → | Cardinal | Fixed | Mutable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🔥 Fire | ♈ Aries | ♌ Leo | ♐ Sagittarius |
| 🌱 Earth | ♑ Capricorn | ♉ Taurus | ♍ Virgo |
| 💨 Air | ♎ Libra | ♒ Aquarius | ♊ Gemini |
| 💧 Water | ♋ Cancer | ♏ Scorpio | ♓ Pisces |
Ruling planets
Every sign has a ruling planet — in traditional astrology, one of the seven classical bodies visible to the naked eye (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). When Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered in the modern era, astrologers gradually assigned the three outermost to Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces respectively, though traditional practitioners often still use the older rulerships. This tool shows both where relevant.
| Sign | Traditional ruler | Modern ruler (where different) |
|---|---|---|
| ♈ Aries | Mars | — |
| ♉ Taurus | Venus | — |
| ♊ Gemini | Mercury | — |
| ♋ Cancer | The Moon | — |
| ♌ Leo | The Sun | — |
| ♍ Virgo | Mercury | — |
| ♎ Libra | Venus | — |
| ♏ Scorpio | Mars | Pluto (after 1930) |
| ♐ Sagittarius | Jupiter | — |
| ♑ Capricorn | Saturn | — |
| ♒ Aquarius | Saturn | Uranus (after 1781) |
| ♓ Pisces | Jupiter | Neptune (after 1846) |
What "on the cusp" actually means
If your birthday lands within a day or two of a sign boundary, you are described as being on the cusp. Someone born on November 22 sits between Scorpio (which ends November 21) and Sagittarius (which starts November 22). Someone born on January 20 sits between Capricorn (ending January 19) and Aquarius (starting January 20). These birthday windows are the ones where people most often get confused about their sign — and where online tools most often disagree, because the exact time the Sun crosses the boundary varies slightly from year to year.
In this calculator, the cusp is flagged, not invented. If your birthday is within two days of a boundary, the tool highlights that fact and shows you the neighbouring sign, so you know your birthday sits at the transition. The primary assignment is still the sign whose date range contains your birthday — that is the standard convention used across horoscope columns, print zodiac charts, and almost every consumer astrology source.
💡 Why cusp dates can shift by a day. The Sun's ingress into each sign happens at a specific moment in time, not on a whole day. Over the leap-year cycle, that moment drifts by up to about a day. The Aries ingress, for example, can fall on March 19, 20 or 21 depending on the year. For a strict astrological verdict on a cusp day you would need your exact birth time and a natal-chart calculator. For everyday purposes, the date range shown here is what almost everyone uses.
Why there are twelve signs, not thirteen
Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, is a real constellation on the ecliptic that the Sun crosses for roughly eighteen days each year — usually from about November 29 to December 17. Because it is not one of the twelve traditional zodiac signs, occasional news stories about a mysterious "13th sign" claim it "should" be included and that all the zodiac dates "should" shift. Both claims misread how astrology works.
The zodiac is not defined by which constellations the Sun happens to be in. It is a mathematical division of the ecliptic into twelve equal 30° arcs, anchored to the March equinox. The constellation boundaries were only formally fixed by the IAU in 1930, and they are extremely uneven — the Sun spends eight days in Scorpio's patch of sky and forty-four days in Virgo's, which would make a "constellation-based zodiac" unusable as a twelve-sign calendar. Astrology kept the equal-division framework, so the zodiac stayed twelve signs. Ophiuchus is astronomy, not astrology — it is neither a zodiac sign nor a hidden truth about your star sign.
The Chinese zodiac — twelve animals, one per year
The Chinese zodiac is a separate system that runs on years instead of months. Twelve animal signs cycle in order over a twelve-year loop: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. If you enter a birth year in the calculator, the tool shows your animal sign alongside your Western Sun sign. The two are independent — knowing one tells you nothing about the other — but people often enjoy comparing them.
Two caveats worth knowing. First, the Chinese New Year does not fall on January 1 — it usually lands between January 21 and February 20 on the Gregorian calendar, so people born in late January or early February sit on the boundary between two animals. Second, the Chinese zodiac traditionally blends the animal with one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) cycling every two years, but the simplified year-only version is what the vast majority of consumer tools display. The Chinese animal shown here uses the simple year convention.
Compatibility — the traditional element pairing rules
Sign compatibility is one of the most searched astrology topics, and the classical rule is remarkably simple: pair signs whose elements complement each other. Same-element signs are also considered compatible because they share a basic temperament, while the "cross-element" pairs (fire with water, air with earth, and their reverses) are traditionally described as more challenging.
- 🔥 Fire with 💨 Air — a classical complementary pairing. Fire signs are said to be energised by air signs, which in turn are stimulated by fire.
- 🌱 Earth with 💧 Water — the other classical pairing. Earth signs are said to stabilise water signs, which provide emotional depth in return.
- Same element — also considered compatible, because both signs share the same underlying element.
- Fire ↔ Water, Fire ↔ Earth, Air ↔ Water, Air ↔ Earth — traditionally considered more challenging, because the elements pull in different directions.
The result card shows the two same-element signs, the three complementary-element signs, and the six traditional "challenging" signs for your sign. This is the framework that appears across almost every astrology source, from horoscope columns to compatibility matchmakers. It is a cultural and symbolic system, not a scientific one, and this tool presents it as such.
Where people use this calculator
- Quick sign lookup. Settle the "what's your sign?" question for a friend, a date, or a new coworker without opening a full horoscope app.
- Gift shopping. Confirm someone's sign before buying a zodiac mug, necklace, print, or birthday card. A common source of expensive mistakes is buying the wrong sign.
- Content and writing. Journalists, marketers and social-media writers often need the exact date range for a sign or a quick list of traits — the reference table covers this in one glance.
- Student assignments. The tool shows the 4 × 3 element–modality grid and ruling planets, which is exactly the material a class on astrology, mythology or cultural studies covers.
- Personal curiosity. If you've always been told you're a Scorpio but were born on November 22, the cusp check tells you where the confusion comes from.
- Cusp birthdays. If you were born near a sign boundary, this tool gives you the practical verdict (the sign whose date range contains your birthday) and the caveat (the boundary shifts slightly by year).
Common mistakes with zodiac sign lookups
- Confusing cusp dates with the wrong sign. October 22 is still Libra (Libra runs to October 22; Scorpio starts October 23). January 20 is Aquarius, not Capricorn. The date-range table above resolves every boundary case.
- Thinking the birth year changes the Sun sign. It does not. The twelve signs are equal 30° divisions from the March equinox — a fixed framework — so the sign depends only on the month and day.
- Mixing up Western and Chinese zodiacs. They are completely independent. Your Western Sun sign uses the month and day; your Chinese animal uses the year. The two systems share nothing.
- Believing there is a 13th sign. Ophiuchus is a real constellation, not a zodiac sign. The astrological zodiac has twelve signs and always has.
- Entering an invalid date. April, June, September and November only go to 30 days; February caps at 29. The tool flags impossible dates and rejects them rather than silently converting.
- Assuming your Sun sign is your whole chart. The Sun sign is only one position of a natal chart. The Moon sign, rising sign (ascendant) and the signs of every planet also matter — and the rising sign requires your birth time and birthplace.
- Reading too much into compatibility rules. The element-based pairings are a cultural convention, not a predictive system. Treat them as a playful framework, not a verdict on a relationship.
Privacy and data storage
The zodiac sign calculator runs entirely in your browser using vanilla JavaScript. The birth date you enter is never uploaded, logged, or stored on a server. There is no account, no login, and no network request after the page loads — the tool works offline once cached. If you use the Share button, the date is encoded into the URL hash on your own device; it never leaves your browser.
Limitations
- The tool uses the Western tropical zodiac, which is what the vast majority of consumer astrology uses. It does not implement the sidereal or Vedic zodiac, which uses different sign boundaries.
- It computes the Sun sign only. It does not compute the Moon sign, the rising sign (ascendant), the house positions, or any planetary aspects — those require a natal chart with birth time and birthplace.
- Cusp detection flags birthdays within two days of a boundary. A strict verdict on a cusp birthday requires the exact solar ingress time for the year and the birth time, which is beyond what a date-only tool can provide.
- The Chinese zodiac uses the simple year-cycle rule. It does not account for the Chinese New Year boundary in late January / early February, nor for the five-element cycle layered on top of the animals.
- The compatibility guidance uses the traditional element-pairing rule. It is a cultural convention and is presented as such.
- Traits are presented as widely reported traditional associations, not as scientific personality claims. The tool labels them accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my zodiac sign by date of birth?
Enter your birth month and day in the calculator. The tool matches your date against the twelve Western zodiac date ranges: Aries Mar 21 – Apr 19, Taurus Apr 20 – May 20, Gemini May 21 – Jun 20, Cancer Jun 21 – Jul 22, Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22, Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22, Libra Sep 23 – Oct 22, Scorpio Oct 23 – Nov 21, Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21, Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 19, Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18, Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20.
What is my zodiac sign if I was born on a cusp?
A cusp is the boundary between two signs. The tool assigns one sign based on the standard Western date ranges — the sign whose date range contains your birthday — and it flags birthdays that fall within two days of a boundary as cusp dates so you can see you are near a transition. In professional astrology the exact sign can depend on the birth time, because the Sun crosses the boundary at a specific moment on that day.
What are the zodiac sign dates?
Aries: March 21 – April 19. Taurus: April 20 – May 20. Gemini: May 21 – June 20. Cancer: June 21 – July 22. Leo: July 23 – August 22. Virgo: August 23 – September 22. Libra: September 23 – October 22. Scorpio: October 23 – November 21. Sagittarius: November 22 – December 21. Capricorn: December 22 – January 19. Aquarius: January 20 – February 18. Pisces: February 19 – March 20.
What zodiac sign is September 22?
September 22 is the last day of Virgo. Virgo runs from August 23 to September 22. Libra starts the next day, September 23. Because September 22 is on the boundary, the tool flags it as a cusp birthday — near the Virgo–Libra transition.
What zodiac sign is January 20?
January 20 is the first day of Aquarius. Aquarius runs from January 20 to February 18. Capricorn runs from December 22 to January 19. January 20 is on the boundary, so the tool flags it as a cusp birthday — near the Capricorn–Aquarius transition.
What are the four zodiac elements?
Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Each sign belongs to exactly one element and one modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable), and the twelve combinations of four elements with three modalities produce the twelve signs.
What are zodiac modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable)?
Modalities — also called quadruplicities — describe how each sign initiates or sustains energy. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain and stabilize. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and change. Every element contains one sign of each modality, so the twelve signs form a complete 4 × 3 grid.
What is the ruling planet of each zodiac sign?
Aries — Mars. Taurus — Venus. Gemini — Mercury. Cancer — the Moon. Leo — the Sun. Virgo — Mercury. Libra — Venus. Scorpio — Pluto (modern) or Mars (traditional). Sagittarius — Jupiter. Capricorn — Saturn. Aquarius — Uranus (modern) or Saturn (traditional). Pisces — Neptune (modern) or Jupiter (traditional).
Is there a 13th zodiac sign, Ophiuchus?
Ophiuchus is a real constellation that the Sun passes through on the ecliptic, but it is not a zodiac sign in the astrological system. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac — twelve equal 30° divisions starting at the March equinox — which is a symbolic framework independent of the actual constellation boundaries. Some astronomy explainers describe Ophiuchus as a "13th sign" for clarity, but the astrological zodiac has always been twelve signs.
Does my zodiac sign change if I enter a different birth year?
No. The Sun sign depends only on the month and day in the Western tropical zodiac — the twelve divisions are fixed at 30° each starting from the March equinox. The birth year matters only for the Chinese zodiac animal, which cycles every twelve years, and for narrowing down edge-of-boundary cases where the Sun's ingress can shift by up to about a day across the leap cycle.
What is the difference between the Western zodiac and the Chinese zodiac?
The Western zodiac has twelve signs determined by the month and day of birth — it tracks the Sun's position along the ecliptic. The Chinese zodiac has twelve animal signs determined by the year of birth on a twelve-year repeating cycle (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig). They are completely independent systems.
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
A common traditional rule pairs signs within complementary elements: fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) generally pair well with air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) generally pair well with water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Same-element pairings are also considered compatible. This is a popular cultural framework rather than a scientific claim.
Do I need my exact birth time to find my zodiac sign?
Not for the Sun sign. The Sun sign is determined by the date alone for almost every birthday. Birth time matters only in two situations: (1) when the birthday falls on a day the Sun crosses a sign boundary, and (2) for computing the rising sign (ascendant) and the exact house positions in a natal chart. This calculator does not require a birth time.
What is the order of the zodiac signs?
The twelve signs run in this order: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. The cycle starts with Aries at the March equinox and moves counter-clockwise around the wheel, ending with Pisces just before the next March equinox.
Is my birth date stored or uploaded?
No. The zodiac sign calculator runs entirely in your browser using vanilla JavaScript. The date you enter is never uploaded, logged or stored on a server. There is no account, no login and no network request after the page loads. The optional Share button encodes the date into the URL hash on your own device — it never leaves your browser.
